We firmly believe that everyone should have access to outdoor recreation, regardless of means, and that's why the maps, directions, and learning resources for the Walking City Trail will always be free; as will many of our guided trail events. But it takes a great amount of time and labor to create these trail resources. And in a metro area as expensive as Greater Boston, where few can afford to work for free, this poses a challenge for a grassroots initiatives like the Walking City Trail. We are fortunate and very grateful to have been supported by Boston hikers and park enthusiasts since our inception. Direct contributions to the trail project fund have made it possible to host this website, create and install signs along the trail, and spend time building relationships with local partners to expand the trail's accessibility.
At this time, we cannot offer the benefit of tax-deductions to our supporters, as we do not yet have the infrastructure in place to form a nonprofit or establish a fiscal sponsorship with one. This could certainly change in the future, but for now, what we can offer all of our generous backers is the chance to see a direct contribution invested in near-term trail initiatives that enhance the WCT experience. This year, our list of trail projects includes the following:
- Hosting more free community hikes
- Installing semi-permanent trail signs and markers
- Publishing historic and edible guides to the trail
- Publishing a manual on establishing urban trails
- Holding collaborative trail events with ally organizations
- Creating an online directory of all Boston Trails
- Beginning the research for Boston's next trail
By making a contribution to the Walking City Trail today, you will make it possible for us to invest the time and labor that these projects will require. Thank you for your support!
